One more game is required for the State Championship
Fresno – Sacramento City College's Matt Ornelas gave his team exactly what they were looking for. Making his 12thappearance of the season (ninth start), Ornelas pitched 8 2/3 innings and threw 135 pitches to lead the Panthers to a 6-3 win over San Joaquin Delta College in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball State Championships. The win forces a winner-take-all game between the two Big 8 Conference rivals. The teams have played each other five times this season and #6 will determine the state champion.
- Matt Ornelas (Sacramento City) – Earned his second win of the season by pitching 8 2/3 innings and threw 135 pitches. After surrendering a run on two hits in the first inning, he scattered five hits the rest of the way before giving way to Lucas Reid, who recorded the final out for his fourth save of the season.
- Kody Gardner (Sacramento City) – Went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored
- Creed Smith (Sacramento City) – Reached base three times and made two fine running catches in the outfield.
- Kevin Saenz (Sacramento City) – Gave the Panthers a 5-1 lead with a 2-run double in the third inning.
- Beau Philip (San Joaquin Delta) – Went 2-for-5 and scored a pair of runs
- Zack Mathis (San Joaquin Delta) – Drove in a pair of runs in the ninth inning with a bases loaded single and accounted for all three of the Mustangs runs
- Jake Cruce (San Joaquin Delta) – Came to the plate in the ninth inning as the tying run, but grounded out to end the game
For the second consecutive year the state championship comes down to a Game 7
