Basketball sharp shooters net January's CCCSIA State Athlete of the Month honors
PASADENA - Two dynamic basketball players--Los Angeles Southwest College's Brandon Fredrick and Butte's Meghan Weinrich--are the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) State Athletes of the Month for January, 2022.
Fredrick, a 5-foot-10 guard from St. Louis, Mo., averaged 32.2 points per game in six contests in January, leading the state #17-ranked Cougars to four victories. He had back-to-back, 40-point plus efforts, scoring 42 points in a 100-93 win over Long Beach CC, then pouring in 45 points as LASW won a wild one over LA Trade-Tech, 125-110. The sophomore's shooting numbers in the month were an outstanding 55 percent from the field, 48 percent from 3-point land (31 total treys), and 82.5 percent from the free throw line.
Leading the state in total 3-pointers with 97, his 532 points in 21 games going into this week's play also tops all players in California. He is the first sports information AOTM ever to come from LASW.
Weinrich, a 5-9, forward, paced state #15-rated Butte to a 5-0 record in January thanks to a solid, all-around performance with averages of 24 points, 11.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 6 steals. She made 49 percent from the floor. Overall, she is 10th in the state in scoring at 21.7 points a game.
The Roadrunners' freshman was quite a star at the prep level when she became the CIF Northern Section's second all-time leading scorer while at Willows High. Weinrich is the fifth Butte student-athlete to capture an AOTM award and first since 2018.
