SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Ian Dretzka scored four goals, including two in the fourth quarter, and Long Beach City College never trailed, but couldn't pull away from a spirited Sierra College effort, as the Vikings beat the Wolverines, 13-10, on Saturday to claim third place at the 2017 California Community College Men's Water Polo Championships at Cuesta College.
Long Beach, which lost in overtime to West Valley during Friday's semifinals, finishes its season with a 21-7 record while Sierra concludes its year at 16-10. Samuel Hastie scored twice to lead the Wolverines.
Long Beach scored twice in the first quarter - the first by Chaz Harker just over a minute into the game - but Sierra answered each time, including a score by Sawyer Nordell with only five seconds remaining in the quarter. But three straight goals to start the second period gave the Vikings a 5-2 lead which they moved to 6-4 at halftime.
Trailing 7-4 in the third, Sierra rallied to eventually get within 8-7 after a goal from Cameron Hoppe with 3:33 left. However, Dretzka answered with his second goal of the game just 20 seconds later to make it a two-goal lead for Long Beach.
Sierra twice got to within a goal again, including Daniel Alvarez' score with 6:16 to play but Dretzka scored twice within 25 seconds to give the Vikings some late breathing room.
Felipe Carsalade, Karlo Krmek and Kobe Jackson each scored twice for Long Beach while Aaron Mowl, Chaz Harker, Mario Moran added one. Hoppe tallied a pair of goals for Sierra while Alvarez, Nordell, Salvador Quirarte, Brett Harriman and Noah Scholar.
Carl Matthews had seven goalie saves for the Vikings while Alex Watkins had seven for the Wolverines.
