Fullerton regains top spot in CCCSIA poll, NorCal claims three of top four positions

JC Athletic Bureau Coaches Poll (Sept. 10)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Fullerton College turned its 21st consecutive win into a return trip to the top of the California Community College Sports Information Association Football Poll but is being chased in the next three spots by a trio of unbeaten teams from Northern California - College of San Mateo, City College of San Francisco and Laney College.

The Hornets regained the pole position after winning a big game at No. 3 Riverside City, 34-33, on Saturday night. While San Mateo, which beat San Joaquin Delta, 31-12, garnered seven of 14 first-place votes in its bid to stay No. 1, Fullerton's win resonated enough with voters to give them six first-place tallies and 291 total points. The Bulldogs are close behind in second with 288 points while CCSF, which down No. 17 Sacramento City, 37-29, jumped two spots to No. 3 with 255 points. Laney made the biggest jump inside the top 10, moving from No. 8 to No. 4 after turning back visiting No. 4 American River, 41-14.

Ventura (2-0), coming off its 34-19 win against No. 13 Saddleback, vaulted three spots to No. 5 while College of the Canyons (2-0) bested Grossmont, 27-14, to claim No. 6. Mt. San Antonio (1-1) and Riverside (1-1) are tied at No. 7 while American River (1-1) slipped to a tie for No. 9 with Fresno City (1-0), which had its game at the College of the Siskiyous postponed to Oct. 6 due to fires in Northern California.

Cerritos (2-0) continued its strong start and sits just outside the top 10 at No.11 while Southwestern (2-0) is No. 12. Long Beach City (1-1), Bakersfield (1-1) and Citrus (2-0) round out the top 15. Butte (1-1) and Chabot (2-0) are tied for No. 16 with Modesto (1-1), West Hills Coalinga (2-0) and Mt. San Jacinto (2-0) completing the poll.

Just a few top-20 showdowns dot this week's schedule but one is a rematch in Sacramento of last year's NorCal Championship won by No. 2 San Mateo against No. 9 American River. San Francisco will host No. 18 Modesto in another and Fresno City will host No. 16 Butte.

Fullerton and San Mateo occupy the top two spots in the JC Athletic Bureau Coaches Poll released on Monday with Mt. San Antonio and San Francisco tied for third. The CCCFCA Coaches Regional Polls were also released for the first time this week with Fullerton (SCFA National), San Bernardino Valley (SCFA American), College of San Mateo (NCFC National) and Reedley, Monterey Peninsula and Hartnell (NCFC America) holding down the top positions in those rankings.
